Good afternoon members and friends,
The new year has brought with it cold starry nights and some crisp sunny days. While these seasonal changes may bring adventuresome skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding to our lives, our intention remains constant – to be open to the present moment wherever we are and whatever we are doing.
With the cold weather also comes the OBS Annual General Meeting and Social. The executive board invites you to attend the event next month on Sunday, February 7th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. As in previous years’ the gathering will be held at the Old Sunnyside Firehall Community Centre. The executive board has planned a short reporting period with the election of new officers, followed by social time together. All members and friends are welcome to attend.
Having recently returned from an “inspiring” pilgrimage to India, Luang Por Viradhammo offers a New Year’s Greeting. Now, he and the monks at Tisarana, along with Ayya Medhanandi and the sisters at Sati Saraniya begin their annual three month winter retreat. Public meditation at Tisarana and Sati Saraniya will resume in April, 2016.
The Winter Chapter of the Dana Offering Program for Tisarana can be found on our new OBS Blog . This section of the site is devoted to giving you all the information you need in order to offer dana. A monthly dana roster has been filled in allowing the continuation of weekly dana to the Hermitage through the winter months.
Ayya Medhanandi has expressed her thanks to the OBS as did Venerable Cunda when he sent this note last week …” the monastery did not need to buy food for the last nine months (April 1st to January 1st) due to all of the kind dana offerings this year. I believe this was an unusual experience for the monastery (to solely subsist on material food offerings for this length of time)… I’m very happy that the OBS could make many kind contributions this year.”
The OBS executive board is grateful for: the dana coordination efforts of Lisa Gorecki and Barbara Lewis; the many dana drivers; the many, many generous food offerings of OBS members and friends; and the Sukhothai Restaurant who quietly provides a full Thai meal once a month to the Sangha. Thank you all!
An Expression of Gratitude for OBS Monastic Drivers from Vivienne Bartlett
Vivienne Bartlett, the OBS Coordinator for the Monastic Drivers, would like to thank those members and friends who gave generously of their time to drive the monastics and Ayya Medhanandi this past year to and from events in the city. A long time OBS member, Vivienne expressed how heavily the OBS relies on its drivers to bring the teachers to our regularly scheduled Quaker House Friday Evenings and Days of Mindfulness at the Tu-An Pagoda. On behalf of all of us who attended these dhamma occasions, a huge thank you to these drivers.

Shepherds of Good Hope Soup Kitchen with Ann Waters on Sunday, February 14th, 2016
Once again we are organizing a meal service at the Shepherds of Good Hope. To make this event a success, 20 volunteers are needed to work the morning kitchen shift on Sunday February 14th. The mission is located in Lowertown at 233 Murray Street at the corner of King Edward Avenue. The shift is from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The work involves cutting vegetables and making sandwiches until 11:00 am at which time the volunteers are served lunch. Then we serve the clients and do the clean-up. All who have participated in the past have found it to be a rewarding way to contribute to the community as well as a great opportunity to meet fellow friends and members of the OBS. If you would like to help out or if you have any questions about the initiative please contact Ann Waters at firstname.lastname@example.org
